22 Banks & Credit Unions That Have Notaries

Many banks and credit unions, such as Bank of America, Capital One, Connexus Credit Union, Fifth Third Bank, and Wells Fargo have notaries on staff, and customers can often stop in and have documents notarized for free.

Some banks require that you make an appointment beforehand to make sure the notary is available.

If you’re not an account holder at the bank, you may be able to use the notary service, though there will likely be a fee.

See below for the list of banks and credit unions with notaries, including information about availability and fees.

Types of Notaries

A notary public, or “notary” for short, is a person who witnesses the signing of important documents and confirms this by signing and affixing a seal.

The notary verifies that the person signing is who they say they are, typically by checking a photo ID. The notary will also make sure that the person is signing willingly and not being forced into signing.

While notaries can be found in different settings, they’re all notaries public for their state. Each state has slightly different rules and laws concerning notaries.

Some states require new notaries public to complete training, pass an exam, or have a background check; other states don’t. Once they complete their state’s designated process, notaries are considered public officials.

In general, any notary public can notarize the signature on most documents you may need, such as auto titles, affidavits, living wills, or health care powers of attorney.

There’s also a special type of notary public called a signing agent. A signing agent is someone who has already been certified as a notary public in their state and has then completed additional training in the notarization of signatures for loan documents.

The signing agent is likely certified as such and has passed a background check; he or she may belong to a professional association and might provide related services, such as acting as a courier for the loan documents.

Banks With Notaries

When you need a notary, your local bank or credit union is a good place to go.

If you’re an account holder, notary services will often be free. If you’re not an account holder, you may not be able to use the service at all, and if you can, there’s usually a fee.

Below, we provide the list of banks and credit unions that provide notary services.

Some don’t provide any information about notary services online, so we contacted local branches for information.

We’ve covered the largest banks in the U.S. — smaller regional banks may also have notaries, and since they’re local they might be more willing to accept non-customers. It’s worth checking with your local bank to see if it has a notary available.

See the table below for information about banks and credit unions with notary services, and select any bank for more details.
